Welcome to Year 6!

Welcome to Year 6; a year to make some fabulous memories to store with you for the rest of your life!

Staff Information

Hello, my name is Miss Salt and I am the class teacher for Y6 Kandinsky class this year. My favourite pastime is running and reading. My favourite lesson to teach is Maths and I am the leader of Maths for the school.

Year Group Information

In year 6, we are lucky enough to have weekly swimming lessons for 10 weeks. The swimming day for Kandinsky Class is Wednesday and Mondrian will attend on Tuesday. We will be sending out lots of information about the upcoming SATs exams to parents, for example information leaflets, workshops and open evenings.

Topics Studied

Our curriculum and topics are designed to excite our pupils and enthuse them in their learning. Each topic has been carefully created to teach a wide range of skills and knowledge, whilst covering all aspects of the National Curriculum.

Autumn Term

Our year group will be having the fantastic opportunity to see the Weeping Window at Middleport Museum, and will be completing fun activities based on this wonderful installation. We are working alongside City Music to learn different songs from the 1940s during the war time. We are working towards a concert where the children can perform to their parents/grandparents/carers. We hope you can join us on this day. We are taking part in a WW2 evacuation day, where the children will be dressing up as they would do during the war time. During this day, we will be learning about the evacuation process, basic first aid, sew and mend, and rationing.

Spring Term

At the beginning of the next term, we will be introduced to our new topic through a day trip to Stanley Head. This trip is based on the text, ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and we will take part in activities based on this book.  Year 6 will be inviting parents to a ‘den making day’ based upon our topic ‘The Frozen Kingdom.’ We will also be studying the novel ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ and enjoying celebrating finishing the novel by holding a Harry Potter themed day.

Summer Term

During the summer term, we will be looking at 2 topics: Gallery Rebels and Hola! Mexico. In the first part of the term we will be visiting an Art gallery to collate ideas to inspire our own Expressionist artwork gallery. We will be exploring the work of Mary Wigman in PE and creating our own expressionist dancing sequencing. Towards the end of the term, our focus will turn to transition from Primary School to Secondary.

Further detailed information can be found on the “Curriculum” pages of our website.

Contacting Us

We welcome communication between home and school. Staff are often available at the start or end of each school day or appointments can be made by contacting the school office.

We have 3 Parents’ Evenings during the year; one in each term. Each meeting is an opportunity to discuss your child’s learning and celebrate their achievements and progress.
