Reading and its improvement, holds a very high-profile place within our school as it underpins, not only every subject we teach here, but also the majority of our leisure activities both inside and outside school. For that reason, we are constantly adapting, changing and improving the way we engage children and involve them in the way in which they can develop as readers. Not only is reading taught as a discrete, whole class subject but we have a number of reading programmes that embrace the unique and individual learning styles of our children.

Learning and classroom support workers are trained either by the Local Authority and/or by Ms Elliott to deliver the Better Reading Programme. This is a programme, derived from the work carried out by Marie Clay in New Zealand in the 1970s and first instigated in her Reading Recovery Programme. It is based on a principle where the child is taught three separate 15 minute lessons per week and during each lesson is exposed to three different texts. They begin reading a familiar text and then a recently introduced text and finally ending in a new text. It has proven most effective in enabling our less confident readers to progress.
This programme allows those children who perhaps do not get the opportunity to read as much at home, to be listened to by trained classroom staff and volunteers.
For children who are struggling to recognise their letters on sight, this is an excellent programme based on timed, rapid repetitive recognition of single letters (graphemes) or sounds (which may be one, two or three letter phonemes).
Clarice Cliff Reading Buddies are children from Year 5 who volunteer to give up two 10-15 minute slots of their lunchtime to read one-to-one with Reception children. They share their reading books and lots of discussion of the texts takes place.
Outside the library there is a picnic basket full of books that the children can swap with a book they have finished with from home. The only thing we ask is for them to seek permission from their parents before bringing in a book to swap.
